QUESTION: Is this real glass?
ANSWER: Yes, it is. Depending on the design and other considerations, your window will be built with lead came or copper foil with solder.
QUESTION: What is stained glass?
ANSWER: When the glass is being manufactured, metal oxides are added to the molten glass. After cooling, these metals create the different colors. If we need particular details, like a face, hand, or animal's eye, special glass paint is applied to the glass and then fired in a kiln to permanently fuse the paint to the surface of the glass.
QUESTION: How about leaded glass?
ANSWER: Most folks use the term leaded glass to refer to clear, beveled glass like that seen in many entry doors. Beveled glass has been ground and polished at an angle all around the edge of each piece. These pieces are then assembled into windows with lead came, just like a stained glass window.
QUESTIONS: Can the colors fade?
ANSWER: No. Stained glass will dissolve in water in about 800 years, however. Occasionally, paint will flake away, but this takes many years.
