INSTALLATIONS:

So, if we are here and you are there, how do installations happen?

Your window can be framed in wood with a hook on either side. You simply measure how far apart those hooks are, mark the wood casing of your home window to correspond with your measurements, screw another set of hooks into the casing at your marks, add chain to the frame hooks, and hang.

If your stained glass window was made to fit into the casing, you will need either square wood stops or quarter-round to hold the stained glass in place. By pre-painting or staining the stops before nailing them in place, all you will need to do is touch them up afterwards. When ordering your window, we can advise you as to which method will be the best for you.

For rounds, half-rounds, ovals, ellipticals, and octagons, it is best to fit a piece of cardboard where your window will go and send it to us. It is not necessary to remove your present glass to install stained glass. On most windows, there is a space in the casing that is perfect for the installation. It takes at least one-half inch of space, front to back, for the stained glass and stop material. Our windows are framed with a sturdy metal edge, but it is not particularly beautiful. We usually do not install stained glass right against the existing glass, because the metal edge of the stained glass window is then visible from the exterior. Moving the stained glass toward the interior of the room makes for a much more attractive, professional finish.  Back to Top

What if I move? What happens to my glass?

Any installation can be reversed. If your window is hanging on hooks, take it down. If you nailed in wood stops, slip a thin putty knife under the stops and gently lift them out. Be sure to fill the remaining holes in the casing and touch up the paint or stain. There should be little evidence that your special glass was ever there.

Your glass should be placed vertically in a wood crate with styrofoam or similar padding below and to either end of the glass, and firm but somewhat springy padding like "peanuts" or excelsior between the glass and the sides of the crate. Be sure the crate is kept upright. It must not be allowed to be placed on its side. Securing it to a pallet will help ensure that it stays on edge.

We also offer a Long-term Stained Glass Preservation Program that allows the rebuilding of aging windows over an extended period of time. Many church windows are approaching the end of the life expectancy of their original lead. 

The strength of lead diminishes over a period of 90 to 125 years, depending on many factors. One major factor is whether protective coverings have been in place. Such materials accelerate the aging process by trapping heat and moisture against the wood sash and lead. 

The only remedy for lifeless lead is to remove the windows, disassemble them, and rebuild them with new lead.
